1. Short Title and Citation
This legislation is officially cited as the Punjab Shehr-e-Khamoshan Authority Act 2017. It provides the legal basis for the Authority to provide essential funeral, burial, and transfer services in a dignified manner.
2. Territorial Extent
The jurisdiction of this law extends to the whole of the Punjab. This means the Authority has the mandate to establish model cemeteries (Shehr-e-Khamoshan) in any district or urban center within the provincial boundaries.
3. Commencement
The Act came into force at once upon its notification in 2017, allowing for the immediate administrative setup of the Authority and the commencement of graveyard projects.
Key Objectives of the Authority
Under this legal framework, the Authority is tasked with modernizing funeral services, including:
Standardized Graveyards: Creating organized spaces with proper mapping and record-keeping.
Funeral Services: Providing bathing (Ghusal) facilities, funeral prayers (Janazgah), and mortuary services.
Ambulance Services: Dedicated transport for the deceased.
Maintenance: Ensuring the long-term upkeep and landscaping of burial grounds.
